Several years ago Judy Miller and I covered this kayak accident in Clear Creek near Golden, CO for KMGH-TV. Our story earned first place recognition by the National Press Photographer's Association for spot news coverage.
I believe the piece is a good example for covering a tragedy with sensitivity -knowing the information can be used to save lives. Judy and I - as news professionals - were both well aware to not be in the way of the rescue. We were never "in your face." The rescue sequence and the cutaways of bystander's concern on their faces were captured on the telephoto side of my lens or well out of the path of the rescue when shooting hand – held. Questions were asked with respect. Judy reported with integrity - ensuring the information was accurate and thoughtful. This is one of many stories I shot with Ms. Miller - and numerous reporters, correspondents, news producers, or captured in the field by myself - proud of the important privilege as broadcast journalists to serve the public’s need for information by adhering to the SPJ Code of Ethics. |

Production for Xcel Energy I shot and lit required three locations.
One location I supplied by bringing my portable green screen studio for the narrator. WE used HMI lights with CTB to represent the moon after the power outage. |
