PictureMaybe not the classic way we teach students to hold a camera,or operate a lens - but this sports photographer heard action on the field, looked up from the cellphone in her hand, and captured the play! Wait just a minute, look closely: Can you spot something unusual in this image that possibly communicates a secondary message? (There is a detail in this image revealing how connected we are to our cell phones.)

“Thank you for the great job! That you were able to shoot seven interviews and still stay on schedule is a miracle of no small proportion to me…you have such a good eye for lighting and a keen sense of what was happening in the interview that our footage was exceptional.  You are a great shooter and great fun to work with.”

"As my creative partner on complex video production and digital photo projects for over 10 years, I have found Suzanne Chandler of A Point of View Productions, LLC to be a front-line professional and talented resource for tackling the challenges of storytelling. Suzanne's experience with the camera, lighting and producing always shows on set -- whether it's the rigors of shooting in an underground mine, a placid picturesque lakeside setting or against the backdrop of the high altitude alpines. Suzanne's attention to minor details, coupled with well-rounded skills for shooting images that make a difference, makes her a powerful resource for any project. In a business where quality can be elusive, Suzanne is a rare treasure for delivering results that matter!"

“Suzanne Chandler is a consummate pro and a pleasure to work with. Her speed is only surpassed by her eye for beautiful composition. After just one day of working with her, I felt as if we had worked together for years. Suzanne made what could have been ordinary interior shots look as spectacular as the Rockies. Excellent composition. Impeccable lighting. Nonstop energy. Suzanne came through for us big time. ”

I noticed the red convertible about to enter this painted train mural scene. Panning my cell phone along with the vehicle, I hoped  I left enough room to separate the vehicle from the shadow when it entered in front of the train. The cyclist was a nice treat to  a "transportation" themed message.

Two exposures- two messages

Tip:  PLACING shadows by shooting with the light, the sun, as a rim light, adds form, texture, and 3- D   to the  2-D reality of photography.  For example,  If  you or your client want an image to illustrate the fact students are studying in the early morning, the exposure  on the top right captures that message and mood more effectively than the same composition in silhouette, below using less exposure.

Aerial Skier is a profile piece I shot and co- produced for ESPN in the Nat Sot  (Natural Sound) Style. This story earned recognition by National Press Photographer's Association in the Sports Feature category contributing to the honor I received by NPPA as a "Top 10 Photographer in the Rocky Mountains."
I was hired repeatedly  by” Real Stories” - an LA based syndicated " reality"  show - to produce, shoot, cast and direct actors (as perpetrators) in reenactments with authentic patrol officers.  With only a three-person crew total, take a look at one of  of the segments we did for this Hollywood client:

The interviews with Columbine parents and students - followed by the fundraising documentary for the Police Athletic League I shot was originally posted to YouTube to share with my MSU- Denver  students, We discussed lighting, composition, and natural sound as a storytelling tool. Most importantly we talked about the positive impact visual storytelling can make to change lifes and sometimes laws.

A 29 minute documentary  I shot, edited, authored and produced highlighting a medical mission to Vietnam ( 2010)  During  a  two week window, for over 20 years now,  medical team volunteers bring supplies and training  to Vietnamese care givers. This film is  a " rough cut " yet still tells a story about the volunteer medical team and the delicate surgeries they perform in VIETNAM.  I  screen this film with students to share challenges I had in a foreign country working by myself HOPING it will inspire people to get involved with whatever groups or causes call you. - And I hope it inspires film students to produce stories YOU care about.

“Working with Suzanne is always a terrific experience. She brings great professionalism and enthusiasm to her work. She has a wonderful eye for pictures and the drive and gumption to capture them.”        BILL GEIST, CBS SUNDAY MORNING

"Deki's Journey" is a story I shot  that was included in V-Day 11.11.11 - a full length documentary directed by John Goheen and EP'd by Pat Woodard.   Participation on this documentary  is one of  the most rewarding  of  my career for many reasons, Besides having work included among some of the  most talented and award -winning TV storytellers,   I  personally witness at the many screenings I held in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Semester at Sea, the positive  response and impact  Goheen's vision and film has on our nation's  veterans .
V- Day 11.11.11 was made entirely through probono efforts by everyone involved to use our skills to thank and honor veterans and their families.  It  went on to  earn several awards- locally and nationally - including
an International Silver Screen Award.  Please  share  the full length  film link on YouTube here with veterans and everyone!
Feature I shot for CBS Early Show.  Fun piece illustrates good use of natural sound "breathers" in a typical broadcast news script.

Providing Education, Training and Consultation  - Digital Photography and HD  Media Production

My career in broadcasting started in local news serving Colorado Springs and Denver, expanded to national news,  and corporate production -serving a wide variety of demanding strategic communication, media production goals.

At the height of my three-decade  career, I added  a new role as a digital media instructor professor.

My mission in higher education was to reach and inspire underrepresented voices to use now affordable, and  rather easy, digital technology to share and listen to stories produced by people of all ages and backgrounds.

After nine years in higher education, I returned full-time to freelance photography, digital media production, and  visual media consultation  -currently offering individual and group photography education workshops, visual communication collaboration and consultation for 20 minutes at no charge.

Visual storytelling and filmmaking that makes a difference starts with one step, followed by the next.

Taking action on something you care about starts with investing your time because
you have a  desire to tell a story  visually that matters.

The most important requirement to produce a video with impact  is your commitment to it.

Call me for a consultation if ....
• you have made a million videos, have shot a ton of photos, are new to the power of  visual storytelling, or simply want to have a creative  session.

• you have a desire to use photography or video to tell a story, a need to advocate, a concern or wish to blow the whistle,  an injustice you want corrected, or a reason to celebrate, serve another, rejoice in your faith, share your art, your music, your skills,  your children, your family history,  your special events or milestones, your joys,  your dreams,  your heroes next door or in the world that you admire.

• you want a fresh way to  market your business,  your message,  utilizing creative plus decades of diverse photography and production  expertise to draw upon. .

•Any  event or need you want photographed,

•Any idea you have for a  short or long documentary, PSA ,

•Questions on  recording field audio, any type of media  production including smartphone tips.

•Any visual production or photography topics that matters to you are welcomed to discuss with me at no charge for 20 minutes.

(Of course the content  for your production or photo need  must be legal and not harmful in any way to anyone.)

My goal is to welcome YOU!

The sky is  the limit!
 Look Up!

My philosophy on teaching visual communication:

                       Experiential Education
Before I add  lighting theory  to still or moving visual education,  my students have a strong foundation in photo and storytelling skills using composition, lens choice, angle, focus, exposure, expression, and message,  When I add studio lighting,  I
begin by setting up a lighting scheme myself and not  a lecture on contrast ratios, etc,  I begin by setting up  a positive, hands on,  learning environment. I find that  students use the lighting gear with more creativity,  and less stress after they first have a positive experience  creating images that reveal the drama lighting  adds.  Creative footage acquired
" hands on “ leads  to  expanded  discussions and builds student interests on concepts and academic photographic  theory..  Students expand to more  experimentation based on a growing foundation of success, theory and  yes  ===  fun!

Student photographer, Mark Seims, captured this beautiful portrait of classmate, and fellow photographer, Julius Bitarabeho.

Contributing to another person's  education is equally rewarding to awards or opportunities I have received personally in my production career. I truly enjoy using my photographic and photojournalism expertise for numerous reasons - particularly the opportunity for my client’s -and student's- to achieve THEIR goals.

When I have the privilege to teach photography or media production, I offer a variety of assignments providing  "real world"   skills,  resulting in productions the "real world" uses. This assignment is a HOW TO video - in this case, How to use the Zoom H1 digital recorder.
" Tips is cinematically GORGEOUS! I am really happy to have a few of my personal  "not well-known" audio recording tips preserved in this training video too.My EFP students made it easy for an audience to learn the content - because of their well written, well produced,  beautifully shot and well paced, edited production.
BRAVO!

"What do you see when you look at me?"
produced,  written and edited  by  one of my EFP students, Arin Alexander, is a 30 second spot  illustrating a personal and powerful message using the ease of  21 st century technology.  It speaks to women ( and men)   of all skin colors, age, disability, sexual orientation. It provides  an idea  I   observe by listening :  we have more in common than what separates us.  I am deeply touched by this short PSA for a number of reasons, The first is that it comes from Arin's heart, I was able to provide the environment for her to create and feel safe using technology she was not comfortable with when we first met. Arin's  courage  to  take that first step toward her goal to share a personal message, produced  a spot  people can identify with from around the globe.  Men as well as women  find comfort, sympathy, understanding; no longer feeling alone with similar negative self talk or self  image.
I enjoy working with students  and clients  producing stories that help us take a  moment to hear each other. By active listening, not  talking or yelling over each other,  and welcoming  all  viewpoints,  is a step in the direction  toward understanding humanity  - and addresses a happier outlook improving mental health.

Feeling listened to does not have to be agreed with yet can have benefits of feeling cared about in our interactive  world  that can be isolating  by technology too.

There is a lot of negative energy in my opinion from a bombardment of  communication ,that can be lessened by more positive media production. .There are countless productions providing  positive energy helping students, friends, clients,  whoever  in numerous ways.

As of December 2018 I am no longer teaching in Higher education, Do not hesitate to ask me about any media production, photography question you have - You do not have to hire me -  I can point you in a direction that will add to your message  - or we WILL work together and that is great too!!

I envision a world using the ease and affordability of  digital technology and specifically photography and digital storytelling  for inspiration, hope, education including news and current events and interests. It is my mission through POV productions to welcome ALL to achieve our highest sense of self through creating positive stories that matter to you,

As the OU SAE Fraternity bus YouTube video made national news in 2015, I asked my OU EFP students if they would  like to respond to the SAE video for one of their assignments.  As we discussed what happened on the bus, I asked,  " is it possible  we - as human beings of diverse backgrounds -are more similar  than we are different ? "  IT is horrific what was chanted on that bus, and it took quite some courage for me to ask that question, but my students were shocked and hurting - as I was too,

We went into the studio. I demonstrated how to light  with one light  to have the viewer not be able to  identify visually  who is talking in a video. I  made a  suggestion  students could shoot  in silhouette and have people discuss issues that are affecting everyone as human beings not separated by age, race, sexual identity, religion, disability, etc. .I stated  students could  produce whatever  they wish  as long as the piece accomplished the learning objectives of the assignment in general. Students certainly did not have to respond to SAE, but what a pleasant surprise that two students took me up on my offer and invited their classmates to participate.

This production,
" Stop the Prejudice Spread the Love "  is the work of two EFP students, Gaitlin Didiier and Trevor  Slack,
interviewed their peers- included a grandparent  -for the audio we hear.

A tiny suggestion I  gave  my class ended up with a powerful piece  produced from THEIR hearts, with THEIR message - just as I hoped.  They also earned an honorable mention in the  experimental film  category in a regional student film contest.   I am proud to make a difference  with  students -and clients outside academia -  who seek my opinion for media production.

One of my goals as a media producer- and media consultant  is  to  inspire  and ignite the use of media to
inform and do good.
"Stop the prejudice ..." is a good start.

I shot this story on Snowboarding for NBC Today Show in beautiful Beaver Creek, Colorado. I spent two days in ski boots shooting the retail footage and skiing on the mountain with camera gear. frank Reap was an outstanding chief gear hauler - and expert skier - with all the extra batteries, tapes, WATER, we needed.
PLUS
The fact that I am a photographer AND a part time Vail ski instructor for over 25 years helps! (There is nothing better than pitching ski related stories because often I get to do them!)
I pi
- It is a Funny and well written feature story - Enjoy!
This is a scripted video production I shot for Xcel Energy featuring employees in the field for one scene,  and five professional  actors for the two remaining scenes.

One objective is to communicate an Xcel service when power goes out, Xcel contacts customer's cell phone automatically  to communicate the estimated time power will be restored.   The first scene  is a typical living room - family happily playing board games prior to the power outage, Film tip: We use CTB Full in front of my three HMI Daylight balanced lights to represent moon light after the power  goes out. I think it works well, do you?

The second location in the field with Xcel employees. The third location provided the green screen studio for the actor direct to camera standup. This  is produced by setting up my portable studio  and production gear  in an empty area in Xcel's Denver corporate headquarters.  The actor is  able to point to precise areas  in the composition by using green dots on clear plexiglass  keyed out perfectly by talented composite editor.

My client's vision and planning  is key to the success of the production. (And that Xcel  hired me is also a good call!)  We  had a lot of footage to capture in a short amount of time.  Years of  ENG and EFP experience on my end and a hard working assistant with a "can do" team spirit contributes to  the ability to work quickly in the field as a small two person camera crew. We worked fast and hard enjoying the creative storytelling process too - and Xcel had loads of footage to work with because of my background in news and documentary, meaning we did not have to stop and direct each scene. I could still block the footage in my head which is very efficient - as long as you know this technique inside and out. That's called EXPERIENCE!

“The client is ecstatic with their spot.  They loved working with you…   I appreciate you being able to take the ball and run with it.  The client is very happy. Thank you”
